Modern by Design at the High

If you're in or near Atlanta, be sure to visit the High Museum of Art's current exhibit Modern by Design. The exhibit is a collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art. The High's website describes it as groundbreaking designs of the past, present, and future with nearly 150 objects created by over 120 of the most influential artists and designers of the twentieth century are included.

I describe it as breathtaking and not to be missed. The exhibit ends August 21.

Note: Admission to the High is free on the first Saturday of each month for Fulton County residents and Bank of America customers.

How Much Would You Spend for a Purse?

“This one is the sleeper, we think,” says Sunny Skurow, a luxury expert at Heritage Auctions, standing before a glittering vitrine and referring to #56126, a shiny black rigid crocodile Hermès Kelly with gold hardware from the 1960s that is estimated to sell for between $10,000 and $15,000, with an opening bid of $7,500. This is the first sentence in a recent article in Vogue about a spring luxury auction of handbags.

I like purses but, wow. I think I missed the high-end luxury purse gene. Every now and then I go for something unique and perhaps costs a little more than I would normally care to spend but I have a rule. The rule is that I can't purchase a purse unless I know I'll be able to carry that amount of cash in the purse.

I admire nice purses and the people who have them but I'm equally happy with my more expensive purchases as I am with my recent $1.99 Goodwill find.

Do you have a price limit whey buying a purse or is the sky the limit?

I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours

Here's a sign I really need to get out more. I spent a weekend organizing my drawers but it did make me happy.

I'm not much of an outside girl so I'm running out of indoor projects. I wonder how many times I can reorganize my closet. It's organized by color, type and season.

Okay, I've shown you my drawers, now show me yours.

Two Lips in Need of Color

I went on my annual spring pilgrimage to find a new lipstick. Picking out new makeup is not my favorite thing to do because 1) it takes time to find the right shade and B) it's expensive.

So I went into Ulta and to my surprise, the first thing I tried on was perfect. A great coral/orange that the sales woman convinced me looked great with my skin tone. I agreed and could have stopped there but nope, I was greedy and also wanted a pink gloss. The sales woman last year convinced me pink makes you look younger. I must be a sales person's dream.

When did lip gloss start costing $18 and more? Maybe I should just go with ChapStick. After all, the boy in the classic ChapStick, commercial seemed pretty damn happy when Dr. J., aka Dr. ChapStick, tossed him a tube. However, I'm not a kid from the 70s and I need a little color therapy.

I'm happy now. I can't wait to pucker up and show off my lips.

Beauty, Brains, Talent and Style

I used to think it was impossible, and maybe not fair, for a person to be beautiful, smart, talented and stylish but Nailah Porter is all that and more. Her album, ConnJazzNess, will soon be released. Read about this much buzzed about artist and my friend in this London Times article. Then listen for yourself.

Black and White and Read All Over

So I took a hiatus from my blog. I lost a job, found a new one, and needed time to regroup. I felt I lost my style mojo but now I've settled into my new job, with new people and a new perspective.

So today, I did one of my favorite things that helps me to relax. I looked in stores for something interesting to add to my style closet. However, I picked up a white blouse and a black skirt and then I realized, I was buying the very thing I was wearing.

I tend to gravitate to the same things. I have 10 or 12 black skirts, 10 or 12 black dresses for various occasions and I can never have enough white shirts. Then I thought how easy my life would be if I wore black and white as my self-imposed uniform for work. I like the idea a simplistic wardrobe but I also need color and variety in my life.

I like creating new outfits with various colors and configurations. It's the artist in me to create something interesting, different and unique. But then there's something to be said for a classic. I think a trip to White House Black Market is in order this weekend.
